Where to stay in Metro Manila

If you’re planning a trip to the Philippines and are looking for where to stay in Metro Manila, here are some options for you, especially highlighting those that give you easy access to trains, malls, and other dining and shopping options. I’ve grouped the hotels depending on the general area of where you might want to stay.

What to consider when staying in Metro Manila

Getting around Metro Manila

There’s a train line that runs through Metro Manila’s main road, EDSA. It’s called the MRT, with a few other train lines branching off from it, such as the LRT1 and the LRT2.

While you can take other rides (taxi, Grab/inDrive/GSM for bookable rides, etc.), the MRT is the most convenient, the fastest, and the cheapest, especially during rush hour when the traffic is at its worst. You might want to consider proximity to any of the MRT/LRT lines when looking for where to stay in Metro Manila.

Proximity to food establishments

While you can easily order food through delivery apps like Grab and foodpanda, when choosing where to stay in Metro Manila, you may want to stay somewhere where you can easily grab a bite to eat. In that case, it would be good to stay near a mall.

Where to stay in Quezon City

Quezon City takes up a huge part of Metro Manila, from the center of the metro (bordering Ortigas) to the edge of the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX), the highway that takes you to provinces in the north.

There are several major areas in Quezon City, each known for something different:

  • SM North EDSA: This is one of the northernmost landmarks and the last major mall before you enter NLEX. It’s near other malls like TriNoMa and Vertis North. Note for those traveling for events: If you’re going to attend a KPop concert at the Philippine Arena in Bulacan, you’ll most likely be passing through SM North before taking NLEX, which will get you to the Philippine Arena and the Philippine Sports Stadium in Bocaue.
  • Cubao: A busy hub with malls, business offices, and bus stations that will let you catch rides going to the north or south. It’s also where the Smart Araneta Coliseum, which holds KPop concerts and other shows, and New Frontier Theater, which is one of the more popular fanmeet venues, are.
  • Tomas Morato / Timog Area: This is where the nightlife places are. You can explore the different types of bars and even the restaurants that stay open till late in the evening. Fun fact: some cafes even close at two in the morning because we love our coffee and it doesn’t really prevent us from sleeping at night.

Seda Vertis North is right beside Vertis North, a mall with a few restaurants and boutiques. It’s one of the quieter malls, especially on weekdays, so you might want to stay here if you’re trying to avoid the crowds (note: it can get a bit busy during the weekends, especially around the holidays).

From Vertis North, you can also cross to TriNoMa, a much bigger mall with a department store, grocery store, and a wider range of shops and boutiques. Seda Vertis North is also near the SM North EDSA bus stop and the North EDSA MRT Station.

Restaurant Recommendation: For vegan / vegetarian options, there’s a lovely restaurant I recommend that’s just a few minutes’ walk from Citadines.

If you don’t want hotel food, you can find stand-alone restaurants and other dining options inside the mall.

Where to stay in Manila

Manila is the capital of the Philippines. Here is where you can find Malacañang, the residence of the president. Manila is where you can find the Philippine National Museum and other famous Philippine landmarks, like Intramuros and Luneta Park. You’ll also find Binondo, the so-called oldest Chinatown in the world, here.

But wait! What’s the difference between Manila and Metro Manila? Don’t let it confuse you! Metro Manila refers to the general area surrounding Quezon City, Ortigas, Makati, BGC, and Pasay. Manila, on the other hand, is home to many historical buildings like Intramuros, the National Museum, and more.

Most people choose to stay at the central business districts like Makati and BGC rather than Manila, because of how convenient it is. Manila, on the other hand, might be a little bit more challenging to navigate. Plus, you can always easily schedule a day tour to check out the sights you want to see. But if you want to experience living in Manila, with its old-world charm and historical spots, here are some places where you can stay.

Final thoughts on where to stay in Metro Manila

Choose a place that’s convenient and easy to navigate. If you plan to commute, it might be best to stay in the places near MRT/LRT stations. If you’re fine with taking a taxi or booking a ride, you may find several more options with varying budgets when you’re looking for where to stay in metro Manila.

Your number one priority should be your safety. Avoid budget hotels located in dark alleys or places that are far from the main road. If you don’t feel comfortable, go with your gut and find accommodations elsewhere.

Always book from official sites so you don’t get scammed. That way, the prices are also fixed, instead of trying to negotiate with someone with no authority over the property.

Cautions aside, I think Metro Manila is a wonderful place to stay in. It has historical spots, shopping and dining centers, and fun, little quirks of its own. It’s also the city I’ve called home for most of my life, so I hope you enjoy your visit. In case you have any questions, let me know! I’m always happy to answer.
